What is DeFAI?

DeFAI is the convergence of decentralized finance and autonomous AI agents. Astarter operates at the execution and settlement layer of this stack.

DeFAI is the convergence of decentralized finance and autonomous AI agents. Binance Research, in its May 2025 DeFAI Unstacked report, defines the category as "the application of autonomous AI agents to DeFi systems" and frames it as "a continuation of crypto's most credible value proposition: disintermediated financial infrastructure."

OKX Ventures positions the same category from the user side. In its February 2025 AI Agent landscape report, DeFAI is the first of eight named sectors, and the rationale is plain: DeFAI "combines the advantages of DeFi and AI, aiming to simplify the complex operations of DeFi, making it easy for ordinary users to utilize these financial tools."

Astarter operates at the execution and settlement layer of this stack — the layer where agents run, transact, and pay each other.


Where Astarter sits in the DeFAI stack

Most DeFAI today is software: an agent framework that runs on someone else's GPU, or a hosted yield strategy that doesn't own the rails it executes on. Astarter integrates both halves of the stack — physical compute below, agent execution above, $AST as the settlement asset between them.

Why "Web4 DeFAI"?

The Astarter tagline pairs Web4"physical compute infrastructure, autonomous AI, and on-chain settlement converging into a global agent network" (Introduction) — with DeFAI, the financial category these agents operate inside.

Together they describe a specific class of system: one where the AI agent owns its own compute (via ABox), executes on-chain, settles in $AST, and answers to its operator rather than a custodian.
